Good to know

Mowing done the right way

How a lawn is cut matters as much as how often. A few tips from UW Madison Extension:

About 3 in

Height that helps

UW Madison Extension puts an ideal mowing height around three inches. Taller grass shades the soil, which helps hold back crabgrass.

1/3

The one third rule

Remove no more than a third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Follow it and the clippings can stay on the lawn.

Clippings feed the lawn

Returned clippings break down and give back nitrogen, and they do not cause thatch.

Sharp

Blades matter

Dull blades shred the leaf tips and leave a whitish cast after mowing.

Questions

Lawn Mowing and Trimming FAQ

How high should my lawn be cut?

Around three inches is an ideal height, according to UW Madison Extension. Taller grass shades the soil and helps hold back crabgrass, and the guidance is to take off no more than a third of the blade at a time.

Should grass clippings be bagged?

Usually not. When no more than a third of the blade comes off in a mowing, the clippings filter down, break down and return nitrogen to the lawn. UW Madison Extension notes that returned clippings do not cause thatch.
